Penderitaan, kesucian, dan pengharapan merupakan tiga tema yang sangat penting dalam surat 1 Petrus. Bahkan, beberapa ahli mengatakan bahwa ketiganya merupakan tema sentral dalam catatan 1 Petrus. Akan tetapi, berdasarkan sejumlah penelitian-peneitian terdahulu terkait dengan ketiganya, belum ada satu karya tulis pun yang membahas tiga tema penting itu secara bersamaan. Tidak hanya itu, berdasarkan sejumlah penelitian terdahulu, tema pengharapan sepertinya “terabaikan” sebab tidak cukup banyak yang meneliti sebagaimana yang dilakukan para peneliti terhadap dua tema lainnya. Oleh karenanya, dalam tulisan ini penulis hendak melihat ketiganya secara bersamaan, serta mencoba menunjukkan bahwa tema pengharapan sangat layak diberi perhatian yang serius. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut di atas, penulis akan melakukan penelitian kualitatif melalui studi kepustakaan serta menguraikan ketiga tema itu satu per satu.
